Yorkshire Water - Naburn Inlet Screens

Longwood Engineering successful upgrade of existing screens at Naburn Waste Water Treatment Works in York

In December 2007, Longwood Engineering was awarded the contract to upgrade three existing Longwood Escalator screens at Naburn, one of the main Waste Water Treatment Works for the historic city of York. The project forms part of a wider programme of work undertaken by primary contractor, Costain Ltd , to allow for increased screening requirements and to meet the new Yorkshire Water Asset Standards for Inlet Works design.

The project involved the refurbishment of three Escalator screens with new elements and chains and the installation of three new tanks to help improved flow characteristics to the screens. However, the work had to be undertaken while maintaining full screening capacity for full flow through the Treatment Works at all times and there was concern that with the removal of the first screen, the two remaining screens would not be capable of handling the flow. Our solution was to fit two new brushes to the two remaining screens to handle the flow as efficiently as possible while the first screen was removed. With the brushes in place, the refurbishment work could then begin.

Longwood Engineering, supplied the original Escalator screens in 2000, which were installed at 60 degrees with 6mm 2D perforations and 42% open area to meet criteria at the time. In order to meet the latest legislation, our solution was to fit new 51% open area elements to each screen and to alter the angle of the screens to 50 degrees in order to provide more screening area and to increase the hydraulic capacity of each screen. In addition, the screens were fitted with dual speed motors to enable waste to be removed at a faster rate in times of storm.

The 6 month project, which took place in three phases, was successfully completed by the end of June 2008, during which time full screening was maintained through the Works at all times. The end result has brought the inlet screens up to the new Yorkshire Water Asset Standards for inlet screening.
