Yorkshire Water - Halifax
We chose Longwood Engineering to undertake the modernisation and installation of the Storm Screens because we knew that they would provide a quality engineering solution on time and at the right price, which is exactly what they did. In addition, they were able to provide screens to fit the existing structure, without any further civil works being required, which was a great benefit to all parties concerned. Yorkshire Water.

Yorkshire Water - Salterhebble, Halifax

Successful Installation of Storm Screens at Yorkshire Water's Waste Water Treatment Works at Salterhebble in Halifax, West Yorkshire

Longwood Engineering secured, and has since completed the successful installation of two new storm screens at the Salterhebble Waste Water Treatment Works based in Halifax. The work forms part of a wider programme of improvements undertaken by Engineering Contractor, Black and Veatch, on behalf of Yorkshire Water.

We supplied the original Storm Screens to the Works in 1973. Ten years later, both the Screens and the Chamber were extended, again by Longwood Engineering, to meet increased flows at the time. New legislation introduced in 2003 brought about a requirement for further improvements and modernisation and we were invited to tender and were subsequently awarded the contract.

The work involved the removal of the two existing Storm Screens and the installation of two new 6mm 2D powered screens with a maximum combined flow capacity of 5000 litres per second. All this had to be carried out without either stopping or diverting flow, with minimum disruption or risk to the client. Cost was also a major consideration on this particular project as the screens were not part of the Yorkshire Water Framework.

Working closely with Black and Veatch and Yorkshire Water, we came up with a bespoke solution to meet all the required criteria. After carrying out all required risk assessments and the implementation of relevant safety procedures, it took just four days for the four man team from Longwood Engineering to complete the work, exceeding all expectations.

Says Ian Barker, Technical Director, Black and Veatch Ltd: "We chose Longwood Engineering to undertake the modernisation and installation of the Storm Screens because we knew that they would provide a quality engineering solution on time and at the right price, which is exactly what they did. In addition, they were able to provide screens to fit the existing structure, without any further civil works being required, which was a great benefit to all parties concerned."
