United Utilities - second Combi-Wash
Longwood Engineering provides screenings handling solution for United Utilities
Longwood Engineering has recently completed the installation of a second Combi-Wash at the United Utilities' Treatments Works at Rochdale to provide a total automatic duty and standby screenings handling facility. This is the 62nd Combi-Wash to be installed since the unit was launched in 2006.
A trial unit was originally installed at Rochdale around two and a half years ago and tested so successfully that United Utilities have now ordered a total of 14 Combi-Wash units to be installed across an additional five United Utilities owned sites.
The Combi-Wash was designed to wash sewage screenings prior to compaction, but also to provide a high through put when storm conditions occur. The system has a theoretical solids handling capacity of 8m/3/hour, however peak loads in excess of this do occur, but the system continues to consistently and successfully treat all solids delivered to it. Driven by a single drive unit with a 5.5kw geared motor, the Combi-Wash incorporates a washing section, a dewatering zone and a compaction section. The washed screenings are then discharged through a tube into a skip for disposal by landfill.
